מתני׳ <big><strong>המוכר</strong></big> את הבית לא מכר יציע ואע"פ שהיא פתוחה לתוכו ולא את החדר שלפנים הימנו ולא את הגג בזמן שיש לו מעקה גבוה עשרה טפחים ר' יהודה אומר אם יש לו צורת פתח אע"פ שאינו גבוה י' טפחים אינו מכור:

<b><i>GEMARA</i></b>. What is meant by the word <i>yazia'</i>? — Here<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' In Babylon. ');"><sup>7</sup></span> it was translated as <i>apsa</i>.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' A closed-in verandah; a small, low structure at the side or back of a house. ');"><sup>8</sup></span> R. Joseph said: It means a verandah with a semiopen side.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' E.g., with lattices, like our verandahs. This has a more independent value than the closed-in one. ');"><sup>9</sup></span>
אמר מר זוטרא והוא דהוי ארבע אמות
For one who holds that a closed-in verandah is not sold [with the room]. there is no question that an open one is not. But the one who says [that the verandah excluded here is] the open one would nevertheless include the closed-in one. R. Joseph learned: Three names are found for this structure in the Scriptures<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Viz., in the Scriptural account of the Temple of Solomon in I Kings, and of the Temple of the future in Ezekiel. as it is written, <i>The nethermost storey</i> [yazia'] <i>was five cubits broad</i>;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' I Kings VI, 6. ');"><sup>11</sup></span> <i>zela'</i>, as it is written, <i>And the side chambers</i> [zela'oth] <i>were in three stories, one over another and thirty in order</i>;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ezek. XLI, 6. ');"><sup>12</sup></span> <i>ta</i>, as it is written, <i>And every lodge [ta] was one reed<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' = 6 cubits. The reference here is to the lodges of the middle storey. V. Ezek. XLI, 7. ');"><sup>13</sup></span></i>
הכי השתא התם הא תשמישתא לחוד והא תשמישתא לחוד הכא אידי ואידי חדא תשמישתא היא אי הוי ד' אמות חשיב ואי לא לא חשיב:
long and one reed broad, and the space between the lodges was five cubits.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Ezek. XL, 7. ');"><sup>14</sup></span> Or if you like I can derive it [the fact that a verandah is called ta] from here: 'The wall of the Sanctuary was six cubits and the ta<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Of the middle storey. ');"><sup>15</sup></span> was six and the wall of the <i>ta</i> was six.'<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Mid. IV, 4. This shows that the ta was something attached to the wall. ');"><sup>16</sup></span>

Mar Zutra said: [A verandah is not sold with a room] only if it has an area of four [square] cubits.<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Because otherwise it is not reckoned a separate structure. ');"><sup>17</sup></span> Said Rabina to Mar Zutra: On your view that it must be four [square] cubits, what about the cistern, of which we have learnt, that the cistern and the well are not included [in the sale of the house] even if he [the seller] inserts in the deed of sale the words 'to the height and to the depth'?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' V. infra 64a. ');"><sup>18</sup></span> [Are we to say that] there likewise [the rule] applies only if they have an area of four cubits, but otherwise not? — [He replied]: How can you compare the two? The cistern and the well are used for quite different purposes from the house,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' And therefore it is reasonable that they should not be included in the house. ');"><sup>19</sup></span> but here both [the verandah and the house] are used for the same purposes. Hence if it is four cubits [square], it is reckoned as a separate structure, but if less not. NOR AN INSIDE ROOM WHICH IS ENTERED FROM IT. If a verandah is not sold [along with the living room], do we need to be told that an inside room is not?<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Seeing that it is used for quite distinct purposes from the living room, e.g.. as a box room. ');"><sup>20</sup></span>
